Overview

Impossible Mission 3 (IM3) returns Agent 4125 to a new, larger headquarters to stop Elvin Atombender. The cartridge/disk release (512K) adds new mechanics such as an EMP gun, explosive placement, a 3D lift effect, and extended speech and animation. This guide collects practical tips, basic controls, and strategies to finish the mission across PAL and NTSC systems.

Getting Started

  • Formats: The download includes `.crt`, `.d64`, `.tap` and MP3 soundtrack. Use VICE or your favourite emulator to load the game image.
  • Controls: Keyboard and joystick are supported; consult your emulator mappings. Basic movements, jump, and a dedicated EMP/fire button are used frequently.
  • Goal: Explore rooms, avoid/neutralise robots and traps, collect key items, and progress toward Atombender's core objectives.

Controls & Core Mechanics

Core actions

  • Move / Jump: Standard left/right and jump. Use precise timing to avoid hazards and to chain platform hops.
  • EMP gun / Blast: Short-range EMPs disable robots temporarily. The blast is a stronger area effect; conserve it for groups or dangerous bots.
  • Explosives: Place explosives to clear damaged scenery or open new paths. They can also stun or destroy weakened enemies.

Environmental features

  • 3D lifts: Elevators with a 3D effect change plane—use them to access upper levels quickly but watch for timed obstacles.
  • Speech cues: Over 30 speech samples give audio feedback—listen for enemy alerts or successful actions.

Practical Tips

  • Conserve EMPs: Use the small EMP to bypass single robots; keep blasts for clustered threats or when you are cornered.
  • Use explosives sparingly: Explosives can open shortcuts but may destroy loot—save them for blocked critical paths.
  • Map rooms: Mentally note rooms with stores, terminals, or power-ups. Revisit safe rooms to heal or re-stock if available.
  • Watch patterns: Robot movement is often predictable—learn patrol loops to slip past or time EMPs.
  • Platforming patience: The physics are classic C64; short hops and edge-ledge holds are safer than frantic jumps.

Pro tip: If you can avoid direct combat by timing movement and EMP use, you will preserve resources for the late game.

General Walkthrough

Early rooms

Begin by exploring adjacent rooms to gather extra lives, ammo and small pickups. Avoid deep exploration until you have learned enemy timings.

Mid sections

Use the 3D lifts to traverse between blocks of rooms quickly. When a new block is unlocked, sweep it methodically—EMP single bots and use explosives only when a path is clearly sealed.

Endgame approach

Stockpile EMP charges and explosives before confronting the final areas. Save at least one blast for the boss encounter if available—often the boss fight will require area disabling rather than single-shot hits.

Advanced Strategies

  • EMP chain: Practice timing short EMP bursts to stagger multiple bots so you can slip through crowded corridors.
  • Trap baiting: Lead robots into exploding scenery and detonate remotely to save ammo.
  • NTSC vs PAL: Timing and physics may feel different; on NTSC expect faster action—adjust your jump timing accordingly.

Download & Compatibility

The digital release (available on the official page) includes images for emulators and the soundtrack. Play on VICE, C64 Mini/Maxi, Ultimate, or original hardware using cartridge or disk images.

  • Emulators: VICE is recommended for desktop play. Ensure you assign joystick/keys before starting.
  • Original hardware: Use a compatible cartridge writer or disk adapter for real C64 play.
